About the Position The Opportunity The South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI) is a world renowned agricultural research institute conducting research for the sugar industry. SASRI is offering a one year internship within the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The internship is aimed at providing graduates an opportunity to develop and acquire the necessary skills within a working environment. Moreover the internship provides onsite business mentoring and on the job training for operating and maintaining GIS systems for the sugar industry. The Intern's role is mainly to provide assistance in collecting, collating and recording the GIS database which is then used by SASRI researchers, extension specialists and other stakeholders. Key Responsibilities:
Routine maintenance and analyses of existing datasets comprising various field measurements, using appropriate packages (e.g. Excel, RStudio, Genstat)
Processing existing aerial imagery datasets and extracting data for statistical analyses in photogrammetry packages (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS, Pix4D)
Assisting with carrying out field trial measurements & coordinating operations where needed
Assisting with software maintenance (MyCanesim irrigation scheduling service)
Knowledge exchange (assist with report writing and data presentation using MSOffice)
The Requirements (Essential and General)
A Bachelor's Degree in Geographic Information Systems
Programming experience (e.g. R programming language)
Good verbal and written communication skills
A strong desire to work in an agricultural research environment
Desire to experiment with new technology, new products and new services
Ability to work independently and within a team
