The Natref refinery at Sasolburg was commissioned in 1971 and has been at the cutting edge of refining technology since its inception. Situated inland, the refinery's market for heavy fuel oil was quite limited. As a result, it was designed to get the most out of crude oil and equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The refinery uses the bottoms up grading refining process using medium gravity crude oil and giving the refinery the capability of producing 70 percent more white product. Total South Africa owns a 36.6% share in the Natref Refinery.


The main purpose of this job is to ensure efficient operation of Natref Refinery operating units.

This position reports to the Foreman.


Shift work

Physically monitor production processes

Taking of samples on the plant

Examine equipment and complete safety check list

Adherence to all safety regulations, work standards and procedures

Practice good housekeeping

Safe making and cleaning of plant equipment

Report process deviations

Communicate with the team members in controlling the process

Do fault finding

Must be prepared to work shifts

Assist in incident investigation

Be prepared to change shift as required by unit

Be prepared to perform shift cover duties as per shift roster

Qualification and Experience

Full N3 with Maths & Science & Business English or Grade 12 with Maths, Science & English

NQF Level 2 Certificate (Chemical Operations)

1 Year experience as Process Controller (Must)

NQF Level 3 Certificate (Chemical Operations) Must

2 Years’ experience as a Process Controller (Must)

Driver’s license (Code 8/10) (wish)

Chemical process Certificate (CHEMOPS)

Defect reporting by use of SAP system

Relevant experience on Pumps, heat exchangers, tanks, distillation and reactor

Adhere to all Safety Regulations and work standards and procedures

Practice good housekeeping

Comply with all legal requirements

Work independently and within a team

Be able to work at heights and confined spaces
