SANBI invites Horticulture, Nature Conservation and Ecotourism students to apply for this programme!

WORK-INTEGRATED LEARNING (WIL) PLACEMENT 2023

Closes: Monday, 8 May 2023 Stipend: R3 575.75 Duration: 6 months contract Location: South Africa Duration: 1 July 2023 to 31 December 2023

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), in partnership with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) is calling on second- and third-year students studying Horticulture, Nature Conservation and Ecotourism to apply for work-integrated learning placement. Placement will be from 1 July 2023 to 31 December 2023, duration will only be 6 months. Opportunities include:

Field of study: Horticulture

Locations: Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Cape Town, Kwelera National Botanical Garden, East London, Lowveld National Botanical Garden, Nelspruit, Pretoria National Botanical Garden, Thohoyandou National Botanical Garden, Walter Sisulu, National Botanical Garden, Roodepoort Work areas:

  • Garden planning, development and maintenance

  • Plant propagation and collection management

  • Plant identification, inventory & accessioning



Field of Study: Nature Conservation

Location: National Zoological Gardens, Pretoria

Work areas:

  • Animal care and feeding duties.

  • Enclosure cleaning and maintenance

  • Breeding and conservation programmes

  • Animal capture activities

  • Environmental enrichment activities and animal conditioning training


Field of study: Ecotourism

Location: National Zoological Gardens, Pretoria

Work areas:

  • Biodiversity interpretation

  • Biodiversity monitoring

  • Marketing and Tourism in ecotourism

  • Customer satisfaction surveys

Requirements: Second- and third-year Horticulture, Nature Conservation and Ecotourism students who are self-motivated and enthusiastic are encouraged to apply. Good grades will be a strong advantage. Students who have already graduated need not apply.
