SACSSP: Social Work Supervisors and Facilitators - Social Work Readiness Programme (Nationwide)

SOCIAL WORK SUPERVISORS AND FACILITATORS

SOCIAL WORK READINESS PROGRAMME

A partnership programme between the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) and Health and Welfare Sector, Education and Training Authority (HWSETA

BACKGROUND

Employers have been raising concerns about the readiness and preparedness of newly qualified recruits, based on the requisite skills of newly qualified graduates in general. Social workers were not spared from this view by employers. Social workers already employed, on the other hand, expressed a need for more adequate supervision to support and equip them in rendering social work services. This prompted a national initiative to bridge the gap and be responsive to both concerns by the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) in partnership with the Health and Welfare Sector, Education and Training Authority (HWSETA).

The SACSSP’s Professional Board for Social Work and HWSETA engaged different stakeholders such as Universities, experienced and veteran social workers, nongovernmental organisations and community based organisations, to develop a Social Work Readiness Programme for newly qualified and unemployed social workers. Supervision of newly qualified social workers is one of the components being covered as part of the Social Work Readiness Programme.

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Social Work Readiness Programme is to enhance and facilitate the employability of unemployed social workers and newly qualified social workers through a custom designed capacity development programme that focuses on knowledge, skills and experience to support their readiness and transition to employment.

The Programme aims to promote an understanding of organisational structure and culture, clarify roles and responsibilities, and promote inter-dependent collaborations in line with the mandate and strategic objectives -of the employers. It further recognises that induction is a key factor in increasing retention of social workers in the sector.

The newly qualified and unemployed social workers who enrolls into the Social Work Readiness Programme will be placed at different participating NGOs in the four provinces, and experienced social workers in these provinces are called upon to participate in the Programme to provide mentoring and supervision to the participants.
