Introduction The SAAO is the National Facility for Optical and Infrared Astronomy of the National Research Foundation (NRF). Its headquarters are in Cape Town, while its telescopes are at Sutherland in the Northern Cape. Distributed between the two sites, SAAO employs about 130 people, many of them scientists and engineers, and is contracted to operate SALT (Southern African Large Telescope) on behalf of the international SALT Foundation. SAAO is the premier optical/infrared research facility on the African continent, with global research and outreach collaborations, contributing to SET (Science, Engineering and Technology) human capital development for South Africa. We invite applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Educator Mathematics and Science at the Observatory near Sutherland.
Job description Duties include (but not limited to):
Planning and teaching Physical Science lessons to Grade 10 - 12 learners according to guidelines provided by the National Curriculum Framework
Planning and teaching Mathematics lessons at the primary school Grades 6&7 learners, according to guidelines provided by the National Curriculum Framework
Managing the science laboratory at the schools and ensuring it is adequately resourced at all times
Ensuring learner participation in extracurricular STEM activities, including Science Expos, Olympiads, Astro quiz, NSW and Competitions
Organising the annual Sutherland STEM careers expo
Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities
Assigning work, correcting and marking work carried out by learners
Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress, attainment and behaviour of learners
Analysing student data to inform interventions
Working with other educators to structure targeted academic interventions and plans for learners
Attending all staff meetings, grade meetings, curriculum meetings and school events as required
Promoting the general progress and well-being of learners
Communicating with parents, learners and other staff
Coordinate all activities for science clubs at primary and secondary school in Sutherland
Be trained to host groups at the Observatory for tours or stargazing sessions
Support all SCBP activities
Foster good stakeholder relations
Minimum requirements Minimum education requirements:
BSc and PGCE qualification or equivalent teaching qualification
Three-year qualification in Maths & Science Teaching qualification or equivalent Qualification in Maths & Science teaching.
Must be registered with SACE (South African Council for Educators)
Minimum work experience required:
2 years' experience teaching Physical Science at high school
2 years’ experience teaching Mathematics at High school level
Experience in carrying out science experiments at school level
Desirable additional educational work experience and personal qualities:
Fluent in Afrikaans
Knowledge of English
Comprehensive understanding and appreciation of mathematics and physical science
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Good interpersonal skills
Passion for teaching and working with learners
Works well within a team
Patience
Knowledge of CAPS curriculum
Interest in Astronomy
Experience in coordinating and implementing educational projects
