Future Attorneys Recruitment Programme (Candidate Attorney)

Please note the following:

  1. You will only be allowed to register one application against your identity number. Multiple applications are not accepted.

  2. Legal Aid SA only accepts applications from BProc/LLB graduates. Please submit an application when you have completed your degree and received your transcript.

  3. Legal Aid SA provides opportunities for 300 Candidate Attorneys per annum.

  4. The organisation works on a push system for Candidate Attorney recruitment, meaning that at all material times, the positions are filled. Applicants are assessed and pre-screened for appointability and are matched to opportunities as they arise.

  5. The demand to serve articles with Legal Aid SA exceeds the number of opportunities available in a given year multifold times. Therefore, do not expect automatic or immediate placement. Do also submit applications to serve articles elsewhere.

  6. Applicants need to attach their transcripts to their application

  7. We now require your degree mark average as part of your application

  8. We only accept one application per ID. This preserves duplicate applications from filling in our database

  9. Once you submit an application, you cannot apply again or amend application

  10. It is not compulsory to have driver's licence

  11. Applicants do not have to have completed their Practical Legal Training

  12. The closing date will be announced well in advance.

Future Attorneys Recruitment Programme (Candidate Attorney) – Frequently Asked Questions

I submitted an application in (YEAR) and have not heard back from Legal Aid SA. How do I obtain feedback on my application? Legal Aid SA receives a large number of applications, and follows a stringent candidate screening and selection process. Please be patient. You will receive feedback on your application.

I applied in (YEAR) and had not finished my degree at the time. How do I update my application and documents now that I am a graduate? Legal Aid SA only accepts one application per ID number. This means that once you submit an application, you cannot apply again, nor amend your application. As Legal Aid SA screens applicants, we request the latest documents in order to confirm if you qualify for our Future Attorneys Recruitment Programme. We will therefore contact you to request your latest documents.

I was invited to complete an assessment at a Legal Aid SA office and have not received any feedback following this. Should I assume that I was unsuccessful? Please follow up with the Legal Aid SA Human Resources representative or the Provincial Office that invited you for an assessment.

Is there a closing date for Candidate Attorney applications? Yes. The Legal Aid SA Future Attorneys Recruitment Programme reopened on 1 February 2022. We will announce the closing date in due course.

How many Candidate Attorneys does Legal Aid SA hire each year? Legal Aid SA hires 300 Candidate Attorneys each year.

Who can submit an application for the Future Attorneys Recruitment Programme? As of 1 April 2021, Legal Aid SA will only accept applications from BProc/LLB graduates. Applicants will need to attach their academic transcripts when applying.

I submitted an application before the 1 April 2021 changes to the Future Attorneys Recruitment Programme were implemented. What happens to my application? Do I have to reapply? All applications are saved to our database. There is no need to reapply.

Do I need to have completed my Practical Legal Training (PLT) before applying to be a Candidate Attorney? No, applicants need not have completed their PLT before submitting an application. Applicants are able to indicate on their application that they wish to complete their PLT with Legal Aid SA while completing their articles.

Is it compulsory for Candidate Attorneys to have a driver’s license? No, a driver’s license is not required, and applicants will not be penalised for not having a driver’s license.
