Internship Programme x3 at ARC for unemployed graduates (Grads: entomology, crop protection, nematology, plant pathology, chemistry)

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.


The ARC-Vegetable, Industrial and Medicinal Plants (ARC-VIMP) seeks to appoint highly skilled, experienced, and dynamic persons to the following positions in the new project funded by the National Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) at Roodeplaat


POST DOCTORAL FELLOW – NATURAL PRODUCTS CHEMISTRY /

ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY (THREE YEARS (3) FIXED TERM CONTRACT)

Requirements:

• PhD in Chemistry (natural products chemistry or related discipline involving research on medicinal plants).

• Completed the PHD within the last 2 years.


Key Performance Areas:

• Experience in using hyphenated analytical equipment, which include UPLC-QTOF-MS, HPLCMS, semi-preparative HPLC and NMR.

• Experience in biological screening, isolation, and identification of compounds.

• Experience in developing herbal ingredients (based on traditional knowledge) for commercial purposes.

• Experience in training students in the same field.

• Authored or co-authored a minimum of two peer-review scientific publications in a related field.

PHD STUDENT – NATURAL PRODUCTS CHEMISTRY

(THREE YEARS (3) FIXED TERM CONTRACT)

Requirements:

• MSc in natural products chemistry or related plant science degree. Experience in medicinal plants research, biological screening, chemical profiling, isolation and identification of compounds.

• Willing to study and work at the same time.

• Applicant should be highly motivated with the strong Academic Background


Key Performance Areas:

• Bioprospecting research to identify new plant-based ingredients which include literature study, recording traditional uses of plants, plant processing and extraction, fractionation and isolation of compounds, chemical profiling and structure elucidation of compounds, biological testing of plant extracts, fractions, and compounds to identify the biologically active compounds.\

INTERN: ENTOMOLOGY (CROP PROTECTION)

(TWELVE (12) MONTHS FIXED TERM CONTRACT)

Requirements:

• Advanced diploma (NQF 7) up to master’s degree (NQF 9) level in entomology, crop protection, nematology, plant pathology or related field.

• Relevant experience in technical aspects of molecular techniques and rearing of insects.

• Fine motor skills to handle laboratory materials, specimens, analytical equipment, and microscopes.

• Computer literacy, verbal and written communication, and presentation skills.

• Compliance to safety standards as prescribed by the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

• Planning and organising skills.

• A valid driver’s license will be an advantage.


Key Performance Areas:

• Process samples for insects and nematodes identification and characterization,

• Sample collection - assist researchers with collection of samples on field trips.

• Glasshouse or field trials - assist researchers with the tending of plants or the monitoring of pests and diseases in glasshouse or field trials.

• Capture and process technical data for analysis with different computer programs,

• Reporting on activities to supervisor,

• Contribute to management of laboratory facilities, material and equipment and ensure the optimal utilization of resources,

• Stock taking of consumables and other laboratory reagents,

• Participation in scientific marketing events of the organisation,

• Participate in technology transfer and promotion of research activities in the form of presentations,

posters, workshops, training, products, services, literature, information days, courses, and other events.

• Health and safety - compliance with general health and safety regulations; demonstrate safe use of safety equipment, safe application of surface sterilizers, sanitizers, and pesticides.

• General - attention to detail and work accuracy, ability to work under pressure and handling of high workload at times.
