The Human and Social Capabilities research programme within the HSRC employs a multi-disciplinary group of social scientists and public health specialists who conduct numerous empirical and policy-related studies each year, three-quarters of which are donor-funded.

The Human and Social Capabilities division conducts transdisciplinary, intersectional, policy and programme-relevant research to improve health, well-being and promote a socially just and cohesive society.

The Human and Social Capabilities unit is looking for two (2) IT support staff to work on a national survey that will be conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council. The incumbent will be based in the Pretoria office.

Key responsibilities:

Provide IT support to the Database Manager/Data Specialist in the Data Centre

oSupport conceptualization, setting up and maintenance of databases

oSupport programming of data collection tools (handheld devices – tablets, cellphones etc), piloting and deployment of data collection tools

oSupport the development of data quality control and quality assurance of databases including writing SOPs for databases

Support data collection and fieldwork

oSupport electronic data collection including training of field staff (demonstrating usage of electronic data collection tools)

oProvide field work support by trouble shooting and resolving IT/electronic challenges in the field, including travelling to provinces as required

oSupport field work teams on data uploads and downloads in the field

Support maintenance of data visualization tools - graphic dashboards in line with selected indicators for real-time or near real-time data collection monitoring

Reporting lines: The IT support staff will report to the Database Specialist/Data Manager





•working knowledge of database systems; SQL, MySQL, Microsoft Access, CSPro, REDCAP etc,

•Ability to communicate and demonstrate usage of electronic tools (tablets, phones, laptops)

•Experience with programming electronic and online data collection tools/questionnaires for use with tablets, laptops, cellphones an advantage

Experience collecting data for large surveys, including national surveys

Good communication skills and ability to facilitate communication well with fieldwork staff and M & E staff

Ability to transfer knowledge and skills for optimum use of data collection systems

Working knowledge of visualization tools and dashboards; Power BI, Tableau an added advantage
