Job title: Fieldworkers x8 (3 months contract)
Division: Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC)

Main purpose of the job:
Recruiting participants from high schools in Ekurhuleni and administering the questionnaires and protocols. The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Soul City intervention on adolescent intimate partner violence, mental health and attitudes towards transactional sex.
Location: Ekurhuleni, Gauteng

Key performance areas
• Explain the short and long version of the Soul City intervention to stakeholders.
• Engage with principals or teachers in high schools as required.
• Work as part of a research team to recruit, obtain informed consent from parents and assent from adolescents.
• Follow up with parents to explain the study and answer questions.
• Support adolescents who are recruited and have provided consent/assent to complete self-administered questionnaires.
• Be able to explain the questions in the questionnaire in isiZulu, seSotho or any other language spoken in Ekurhuleni.
• Follow the study protocols and procedures as outlined in the standard operating procedures.
• Manage participant reimbursements.
• Ensure the safety of participants and minimisation of distress.
• Make referrals to a social worker as required.
• Assist with other ad hoc tasks as and when required.
Required minimum education, training and personal abilities
• Grade 12
• Ability to use and navigate a tablet or smart phone (e.g. WhatsApp)
• Excellent communication and social skills in particular with adolescents.
• Experience speaking about difficult topics.
• Good isiZulu or Sepedi or Sesotho and English language skills.
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities
• Drivers licence and ability to drive.
• Familiarity with issues of adolescent gender-based violence, mental health.
• Experience working with children/adolescents.
• Experience in conducting surveys will be an advantage.
• Experience in health research will be an advantage.
• Ability to work under pressure in different environments.
• No criminal record.
• Willingness to work study hours (Monday - Friday or Tuesday – Saturday predominantly in afternoons).
• Able to maintain confidentiality, and to always be professional.
• Ability to manage and maintain good relations with both the participants and fellow team members.
• Self-motivated with strong attention to detail and ability to work both as a team and independently.
