Duration: 4 months

Daily stipend: R247,50

Minimum entry requirements:

• M + 3 (Matric plus 3 years of study) (Qualification with 360 credits or Diploma NQF 6).

• Youth between 18 – 35 years of age, people with disability are encouraged to apply.

DEPARTMENT/ UNIT: Johannesburg Zoo

POSITIONS: Animal Attendant Environmental

REQUIRED FIELD OF STUDY: Management/ Conservation Management

SUMMARY OF ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Cleaning animal enclosures, feeding animals, monitoringobserving animal behaviour, paperwork, environmental education and awareness.



DEPARTMENT/ UNIT: Environmental Education (All City Regions)

POSITIONS: Environmental Educator

REQUIRED FIELD OF STUDY: Environmental Management /Environmental Science/Environmental Education

SUMMARY OF ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Educate and raise awareness about environmental issues, plan commemorative events for environmental theme days, and conduct outreach campaigns to schools and City residents, implement curricula aligned educational programmes at education centres and nature reserved.



DEPARTMENT/ UNIT: Protected Areas (All Regions)

POSITIONS: Nature Conservator/ Park Ranger working in the following fields: Conservation Maintenance. Law Enforcement and Compliance. Ecotourism and Community Engagement. Research and Development

REQUIRED FIELD OF STUDY: Environmental Management/ Environmental Science/ Conservation Management

SUMMARY OF ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Conservation Maintenance: Alien plant control, trail maintenance, fence monitoring, koppies and ridges, bird sanctuary, dam and riverbank management and the use of fire as a management tool.

Law Enforcement and Compliance: Monitoring, reporting, and ensuring compliance with environmental legislation.

Ecotourism and Community Engagement: Sustainable tourism, community liaison, stakeholder engagement.

Research and Development: Research assistance, Environmental Management Plans, veld condition assessments and GIS.


DEPARTMENT/ UNIT: Ecological Services

POSITIONS: Water Monitor Climate Change Ambassador Nature Conservator Ecologist. Horticulturist

REQUIRED FIELD OF STUDY: Environmental Management/Conservation Management /Water Resource Management/ Hydrology/ Horticulture

SUMMARY OF ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Conservation and management of catchment areas, botanical gardens and the nature reserves.

This includes ecological management services in reserves and catchment areas to determine carrying capacity, wildlife management, management of aquatic and terrestrial alien plants, arboricultural, horticultural and integrated herbarium services


DEPARTMENT/ UNIT: Nursery Management

POSITIONS: Forestry Monitor Occupational Health Officer Climate Change Ambassador

REQUIRED FIELD OF STUDY: Occupational Health and Safety/Environmental Management/Environmental Science, Forestry Management

SUMMARY OF ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Nusery Management and propagation, Tree Census, Assisting with Safety and Health Issues in nursery management and tree planting services across the city of Johannesburg. Identify, assess, and control hazards in the workplace ensuring a safe and healthy environment.
