Internship: Modelling and Simulation
About the job:
The CSIR has an internship opportunity for an Intern in the Design and Optimisation Research Group within the Next Generation Enterprises and Institutions Cluster. The purpose of the Internship is to provide graduates with an opportunity to gain practical work experience through providing technical support to the research team with the development of modelling and simulation systems and tools to enable effective decision-making that informs design and optimisation of integrated and complex systems. This position is based in Pretoria.

Under supervision, the Intern will be required to:
Develop models and simulation methods and remain well-versed in technological developments in modelling and simulation domain;
Contribute towards science engineering and technology (SET) activity outputs e.g. technical reports, guidelines, system requirements, peer-reviewed publications, and technology packages;
Support research work related to modelling and simulation;
Conduct desktop research and literature search;
Conduct data collection, capturing and analysis;
Remain current in field of expertise with respect to new approaches in tools, methods or technologies.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
A Bachelor’s degree in physics, applied mathematics, computer science/engineering or related field;
An Honour’s or Master’s degree will be advantageous;
All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA);
Knowledge and/or interest in physics, solid mechanics, applied mathematics, materials science; machine learning
Proficiency in one or more computer programming languages, e.g. Python, C++, Java;
Experience working on Linux environment
Good quantitative skills (mathematics/applied mathematics/computer science);
Ability to work independently as well as in an interdisciplinary team;
Problem-solving, solution-seeking orientation;
Good communication, presentation and writing skills.
