THE THAPELO MADIBENG BURSARY SCHEME
The Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) was established in April 2000 after the promulgation of the Skills
Development Act, 97 of 1998. The CETA’s current licenced period expires on 31 March 2030 and the entity’s primary objective is to
influence the course of training and skills development in the construction industry by ensuring that all training reflects the needs and
requirements of the sector.
BURSARY OPPORTUNITIES
The Construction Education and Training Authority is inviting all suitable candidates who are in pursuit of qualifications in or related
to the construction industry to apply for funding for the 2021 academic year through a CETA Bursary scheme.
ABOUT THE BURSARY
The bursary shall be awarded to candidates pursuing construction related qualifications at under-graduate as well as post graduate
levels, inclusive of Masters and above qualifications as per the CETA bursary Policy.
Successful candidates will be awarded a bursary covering costs of up to a maximum of R 120 000 per learner, per year, over the
duration of their studies to be reviewed annually. The bursary will cover costs related to registration, tuition, books, meals,
accommodation as well as any other support deemed necessary for successful completion of the qualification. Any such additional
funding considerations will be at the discretion of the CETA e.g. research costs, printing, laboratory costs, fieldwork, etc.
In exercising its discretion as it pertains to whether the bursary is to be continued, suspended or reinstated, as the case may be, the
CETA shall take into account academic results as well as any other applicable additional factors
The CETA will award bursaries to suitable candidates studying towards a suitable qualification in or in fields related to the construction
industry at any of the below institutions:
• Public Universities
• Universities of Technology
• TVET Colleges

ELIGIBILITY
• Both under-graduate and post-graduate candidates studying towards a qualification in or related to the construction industry
and in possession of a valid South African Identity Document may apply
• Full or part time learners currently registered with a public institution of their choice and studying towards qualifications in line
with bursary requirements may apply
• Learners who are current beneficiaries of NSFAS, any other public funding scheme and/or any other bursary scheme may not
apply
• Immediate CETA employees’ family members may not apply
• Learners currently funded through CETA funded entities may not apply
• Only Applications from South African citizens will be considered
• Proof of acceptance from the institutions concerned for learners already enrolled
• The applicants must be 35 years of age or less unless applying for post-graduation studies

SELECTION CRITERIA
• The CETA Bursary scheme shall be awarded to candidates who have achieved the prescribed minimum academic pass mark in
their year of study
• The prospective bursars must meet the eligibility criteria of the relevant institution
• Applications from the below designated groups as per the CETA Policy will be given preference
o Female candidates in the construction or built environment
o Candidates from rural areas pursuing qualifications in construction or built environment disciplines
o Unemployed candidates willing to undertake construction or built environment disciplines
o People with disabilities and military veterans
• Learners must be studying or intending to study towards a qualification in or related to the construction industry
SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED
• Certified copy of South African Identity Document
• Certified copy of guardian/parents’ proof of income, social grant/pension where available or
o Last three payslips
o Last six months bank approved statements
o Where parents or guardians are unemployed a declaration of their unemployed status in the form of an affidavit
• Letter of acceptance from the tertiary institution
• Full academic history for learners already studying at University or University of Technology or TVET College
• Candidates completing matric in the 2020 academic year to submit their 2020 academic results
